Dr Allen Shi Elected the 42nd President of the CMA

The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (CMA) held its 42nd presidential election today (27 November). Members of the 42nd General Committee elected Dr Allen Shi Lop Tak, the current 1st Vice President, as the new President. He will take office effective 1 January 2021.

Dr Allen Shi declared that he is very honoured to be elected as the new leader of one of the most influential chambers of commerce in Hong Kong, especially during this turbulent time. Hong Kong has been hit hard by consecutive crisis in the past few years: the global economic downturn, the widespread COVID-19 outbreak and the rise of trade protectionism. In the face of unprecedented challenges, Dr Shi observed that industry is in need of support and assistance more than ever before. He promised that he will, following the example of CMA's previous presidents, further the association's mission of promoting industry development and being the manufacturing sector's voice. He added that he will continue to strive to create a better business environment and help industry navigate the "new normal" and overcome adversity.

"With its advantages of 'one country, two systems' and robust financial systems, Hong Kong remains the irreplaceable engine of our country's development," said Dr Shi. "Hong Kong's manufacturing sector, which has never faltered during the process of the country's reform and opening up, will surely stand to gain from the new round of national reforms," he added. Dr Shi said that he will do his very best to help CMA members and industry get ready to seize the opportunities brought by the development of the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area" and the "One Belt One Road" initiative, furthering industry's integration into national development, especially the latest "dual-circulation" plan.

Dr Allen Shi is the Founder and Chairman of Brilliant International Group. In addition to his business role, Dr Shi has been active in community services. Over the years, he had served on various public bodies, including as a Council Member of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, a Member of Guangzhou Haizhu District Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a Councillor of Wong Tai Sin District, President of Hong Kong Young Industrialist Council Foundation, and Chairman of Merchants Support for Rehabilitated Offenders Committee. He is currently a Council Member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. With enthusiasm for charity and public welfares, Dr Shi was once the Chairman of Yan Oi Tong and President of The Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association. He has also made significant contributions to the higher education sector and youth development.

In recognition of his community and industry contributions, Dr Shi was awarded the Medal of Honour (MH) in 2007 and the Bronze Bauhinia Star Award (BBS) in 2017, and was appointed Justice of the Peace (JP) in 2010 by the HKSAR Government. Dr Shi received an EMBA from the City University of Hong Kong. He has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Management by the Lincoln University and Fellowships by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Canadian Chartered Institute of Business Administration and the Asian Knowledge Management Association. In 2020, he was admitted as Honorary Fellow of the Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries.

Dr Dennis Ng, who will step down as CMA President on 31 December 2020, expressed his gratitude to the General Committee and all the CMA members for their support and trust over the past three years. Dr Ng praised Dr Shi for his familiarity with the association's operation and his concerns for members and youth development. "I believe that CMA will reach another new height under his leadership," said Dr Ng.

The term of office for the 42nd CMA President is three years, from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2023. The 42nd General Committee Inauguration Ceremony will be held on 21 January 2021.
