The 27th Hong Kong International Education Expo Set to Open this Weekend
The Hong Kong International Education Expo (the Expo) is returning for its 27th edition this Saturday, with exhibitors representing more than 600 universities, colleges and educational institutions within and outside of Hong Kong, helping students to fulfil their academic dreams.
Organised by the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (CMA), the Expo will be held from 29 to 30 May at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Hall 1C). As one of the most reputable and longest-running education exhibitions in the city, this year’s Expo will be divided into three themed zones, based on the desired study destinations Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas. This is a unique opportunity for students to explore study options at different levels, including foundation programmes, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, vocational training, bridging courses and examinations, and to learn more about campus life and admission requirements. Mr Kevin Yeung, Secretary for Education, will officiate at the grand opening ceremony.
In addition to many domestic study options, students may explore study abroad opportunities. “The coronavirus has become a major disrupting factor to colleges and universities across the world, with most institutions cancelling in-person classes and moving to online-only instruction,” says CMA president Dr Allen Shi. “For students who are considering to study abroad may have had many questions on their minds during this tumultuous year of restrictions and isolation.” At the Expo, students and their parents will be able to meet the university and college delegates directly to seek advice and to apply in one place. Dr Shi, “I believe the school representatives will have helpful advice to assist students in dealing with the pandemic-related challenges and stress, including the constantly-changing travel restrictions, social distancing measures, visa applications, and accommodation and healthcare issues.”
CMA Vice President cum Chairman of CMA Exhibition Services Limited, Mr Ivan Sze, explains that the visitors can attend 30 seminars and presentations by education and career experts, including celebrity speaker Steven Ma, an artiste and also the promotional ambassador of the Expo. The seminars and sharing sessions will also cover various topics, such as “Life Journey and Inspiration to Success”, “Unleash the Full Potential of Innovation and Technology in Hong Kong”, “Opportunities for Hong Kong Youths”. “We hope that this rich variety of speakers and activities will help students identify their strengths, discover more potential career options and create the roadmap for their success.”
At today’s press conference, exhibitors share the latest trends of studying abroad. Jeannie Tse, Country Manager (Hong Kong and Macau) of EF Education First, states that in addition to mainstream destinations such as the UK, the USA, Australia and Canada, there is a rising trend of studying in Germany. This is mainly due to the free-tuition education offered by most public-funded universities, with administrative costs of only HK$4,000-7,000 a year. The sound education infrastructure and many prestigious institutions also make Germany a great study destination.
Online learning is a new pathway to overseas universities. Alan Chan, Director of Ontario eSchool Asia Ltd, says that Hong Kong students can get an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) through online courses. After completion of the OSSD course, students can apply to institutions in Canada, the UK and Australia. Another speaker, Ng Po Shing, Student Guidance Consultant of Hok Yau Club, also shares tips on choosing a study abroad programme.
The Expo will be open from noon until 6:00 pm on 29 to 30 May. Entry to the Expo is free. Visitors will have a chance to get special on-the-spot offers such as a free portrait photography service, a sanitizer pack, a free language proficiency test, and other souvenirs.
