CMA 42nd General Committee Inauguration Ceremony
Four Strategic Focus Areas to Assist the Industry in Coping with Challenges

The 42nd General Committee of the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (CMA) has been inaugurated in January 2021. A ceremony was held today (17 June) at Rosewood Hong Kong to officially celebrate a new beginning of the association. Mrs Carrie Lam, The Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mr Tan Tieniu, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr Yang Yirui, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR, Mr Liu Zhaohui, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison and Mr Andrew Leung Kwanyuen, President of the Legislative Council officiated at the Ceremony and presented certificates of appointment to the new leaders of the CMA.

As Hong Kong businesses are facing challenges on multiple fronts, President Dr Allen Shi said that it is a great honour and a great responsibility to be the new leader of the major chamber of commerce in Hong Kong.

The new general committee has identified four areas of focus that help members of the industry tackle the immediate and future challenges as looking ahead to a new era. These include: encouraging vaccinations to boost city’s recovery; supporting digital transformation in manufacturing; strengthening the competitiveness of Hong Kong brands to seize opportunities brought by the domestic circulation, and setting up a base in the Greater Bay Area to support Hong Kong enterprises.

The tight border controls have added further shackles onto Hong Kong’s already struggling economy. “The most pressing job for us is to boost vaccination uptake. This is the only means to allow the economy to bounce back quicker.” In a bid to encourage people to get the vaccine, CMA has launched an incentive campaign Take Your Shot. The campaign will commence from tomorrow (18 June) and a kick off ceremony was held in parallel with the General Committee Inauguration Ceremony today.

“In the past few months, we have also deployed many resources to help businesses overcome the new normal challenges. We have launched numerous new services including a cross-border e-commerce platform, a live streaming service and a social media channel to support businesses through and after the pandemic. Our subsidy CMA Testing is also making great efforts to help traditional enterprises in accelerating the application of new technologies in product development and production processes, embracing the opportunities of re-industrialisation.”

Uncertainty surrounding the US-Sino relations highlights the importance of mainland market, especially the Greater Bay Area, to Hong Kong businesses. To win in the fiercely competitive mainland market, Hong Kong companies have to step up and upgrade the level of brand development with new brand management capabilities. “CMA and the Hong Kong Brand Development Council will continue actively provide assistance to Hong Kong products and brands to leverage on the business opportunities brought about by the national domestic circulation development.” To better help members stay on top of the regional development and promote synergies between the industries within the region, CMA has a plan to set up a new service centre in the region.

The CMA 42nd General Committee comprised 109 members, including President Dr Allen Shi, Executive Vice President Dr Lo Kam Wing, Vice Presidents Mr Simon Wong Ka Wo, Dr Edward Chan Kwok Man, Mr Dennis Ng Kwok On, Dr Ma Kai Yum, Mr Jackson Leung Siu Yin, Mr Calvin Chan Ka Wai, Mr Robert Lok Pak Keung and Mr Ivan Sze. The term of office of the 42nd CMA General Committee is three years, from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2023.

President Dr Allen Shi said CMA will continue actively help members entering the Greater Bay Area market to seize the business opportunities offered by the internal circulation strategy
