CMA+ Pilot Manufacturing Center Officially Launched
To Boost Commercialisation of Local R&D Outcomes

The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (CMA) is dedicated to promoting the development of innovation and technology (I&T) and “new industrialisation” in Hong Kong. Today, CMA Testing, an affiliated company of CMA, proudly inaugurated the “CMA+ Pilot Manufacturing Center” (PMC), a state-of-the-art facility that provides production facilities and infrastructure for local businesses and research teams. It facilitates trial production, mitigating technological risks and expediting the commercialisation of research and development (R&D) results.

Pilot transformation involves conducting follow-up experiments and tests to assess the need for adjustments before mass production, including applied research coordination, technology transfer, design finalisation, small-batch trial production and usability testing. Experiences from the Mainland China and overseas have demonstrated the pivotal role of pilot manufacturing in the commercial application of technological achievements.

Located in the Fo Tan Industrial Area, the 25,000-square-foot PMC is equipped with cutting-edge facilities, combining advanced technology with modern infrastructure. It supports companies in designing and establishing smart production lines, including factory plant layout, production and logistics, digitalisation, smart technology and industrial internet of things (IIoT) applications. By leveraging these capabilities, companies can embrace high-value-added production, thereby enhancing Hong Kong’s capabilities in commercialising R&D results and advanced manufacturing. To date, PMC has hosted six local and international technology startups and manufacturing companies across fields such as innovative green technology, advanced materials, health technology, and food technology.

Enhancing the success rate of technology commercialisation
The grand opening ceremony of PMC took place today, officiated by esteemed guests, including Mr Ivan Lee Kwok Bun, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Dr Hon Wendy Hong Wen, Legislative Council Member, Dr Allen Shi, President of CMA, Mr Robert Lok, CMA Vice President cum Chairman of CMA Testing, and Mr Dominic Lam, Chief Operations Officer of CMA Testing.

In his welcoming remarks, Dr Allen Shi highlighted that while Hong Kong possesses strong capabilities in basic scientific research, it faces challenges in commercialising R&D outcomes. “Trial production is instrumental in validating and refining technologies, while also preparing them for full scale production and successful market adoption.”

Dr Shi expressed his hope that the establishment of the PMC would serve as a catalyst for the development of local pilot manufacturing services, bolstering Hong Kong’s I&T ecosystem and facilitating the city’s integration into the national innovation system and the global I&T value chain.

PMC addresses the pain points of midstream transformation
Mr Robert Lok, CMA Vice President cum Chairman of CMA Testing, stated that since the establishment of the technology commercialisation platform “CMA+” in 2021, the CMA Testing has been committed to fostering collaboration between the government, industry, academia and research institutes. The platform bridges the gap between upstream and downstream sectors, enabling research teams to leverage the rich manufacturing experience of the industrial sector for successful market entry of their R&D achievements.

“With the launch of PMC, we will address the challenges faced by enterprises during the midstream transformation and pre-production stages, allowing R&D outcomes to generate greater economic benefits,” Mr Lok said. He pledged that CMA Testing would continue to listen to views of different sectors, understand their technological and service requirements, and encourage more local and international enterprises to participate in or invest in local R&D projects, contributing to the development of Hong Kong as an international I&T hub.

Prominent guests attending the opening ceremony also included Mr Nicholas Kwan, Deputy Head of Chief Executive’s Policy Unit, Dr Wingco Lo, Executive Vice President of CMA cum Advisor of CMA Testing, Mr Calvin Chan, Vice President of CMA, Mr Lo Yuk Lam, Vice Chairman of CMA Testing, Ms Choy Chi Ting, Mr Eric Lee, Mr Sun Yung Liang, Dr Lau Kin Wah, Mr Cheung Wing Hung, Mr Wu Tsz Kei and Mr Ng King Hon, Board Members of CMA Testing.
